Chu Kong starts the series explicitly rejecting and disdaining romantic love. You might think you're special -- of course you are, we're all special -- but the fact is Chu Kong is most likely to be interested in dating you if there's something in it for him. This is also not something you should want in a romantic partner unless you are comfortable hashing out contract terms in advance. Maybe that's your fetish, but he's probably going to want to make a lot of amendments in his favour and he'll be rude about it. Be sure to get independent legal advice before signing anything if Chu Kong wants to enter a formal dating contract.
If you can get past the bit where he doesn't want to date anyone, amnesiac tribulations suggest that Chu Kong is, at his core, a sweet boy who falls fast and hard when he does fall in love and will go to great lengths to make the person he loves happy and not just with generic romantic gestures. If he's in love with you, he'll be interested in what you're interested in, whether it's illicit fireworks or trash romance novels.
Chu Kong may be a self-conscious romantic once love happens, prone to pining and setting great store by love tokens, but he's also easily embarrassed. Every time he falls in love will somehow be his first time falling in love. Don't press boundaries too much until you've known him from infancy.
Prone to jealousy which manifests before any awareness of love enters his consciousness, Chu Kong will have his guard up when it comes to men you aren't both friends with and may be possessive and reluctant to share your attention with others until your relationship is locked down.
Don't date Chu Kong unless he's got double amnesia, in which case you will have a wonderful time. It might get awkward when he regains at least one level of memories, though, so prepare yourself for having that conversation at least once.

Just finished love you seven times anddd maybe I'm a bit dissappointed. They change A LOT of things from the novel and steer it into classical xianxia trope that already being recycled countless times. Ding yuxi is so so perfect for Chu Kong, if only they make him a little bit more bratty. The novel is fun and they tribulation developed in a more natural way, it is heartbreaking at some point (lu hai kong arch goddamnit), hillarious in their hair pulling match, and overall just capable to make you blush here and there.
Meanwhile the drama is like.... a bunch of auntie and uncle watching cringe soap opera. Idk, the way these lead didn't take the reincarnation seriously and stuck in their godly mindset is so off putting. Yes, in the novel they take turn bringing their memories, but you see, even with it they always get carried in human emotion. The tribulation force them to follow humanity, to understand a sense of life and death, of joy and compassion, to understand each other in a more complex way instead of just the reputation attached to their name.
Suck, because this novel is one of my favorite from the author, beside cang lan jue. Maybe I put my expectation too high.

been rewatching lyst and in doing so i had this realization about the show's cycles and patterns through the lifetimes -
chu kong follows a pattern of living on after losing xiangyun. it's not even intentional, like after losing cang hai he had his memories wiped, and then after losing song xiangyun as lu changkong, he had promised to stay alive. so unless they die together or he dies first, if any version of chu kong loses any version of xiangyun, he will continue to live. xiangyun on the other hand, never survives without chu kong. of course there's the third lifetime when she, as xiaoxiang, kills herself upon his death. but even from the second lifetime, she says to her parents that if lu changkong dies, she will die too. so unless they die together or she dies first, because there is nothing stopping her, any version of xiangyun will follow any version of chu kong to death.
but then, at the very end when chu kong gives up his life to save xiangyun through the soul protecting spell, xiangyun lives. she doesn't immediately sacrifice herself and has faith in his return, thus breaking the pattern just like they broke the time loop. every cycle is closed, and that's how you know they'll finally have their happy ending.

The thing that I find the most fascinating about the story is actually is that it’s the first one I’ve seen that tackles what’s it like to have the “mortal experience” and then it’s done but you still have feelings after it and then what.
The closest I’ve seen a drama come to it was with Dong Hua and Feng Jiu in Three Lives where he went to mortal world ostensibly to experience a tribulation with her but in reality because however miserably it would end it was the only way he could experience love with her. But that was different because it dealt with preexisting feelings on both their parts and added stuff on top. Here, this is so different because the thing is - neither of them had any interest in the other as their divine entities (yes yes fat hints they were couple unknown to present them but I am talking insofar as they are aware.) And the amazing thing is she falls in love despite knowing it’s all an elaborate play only with amnesia, an elaborate Truman Show where she’s the only one aware this is not her reality.
And what is even more amazing she does not fall in love with immortal Chu Kong who she still barely knows, she falls in love with the very very mortal Lu Changkong and the thing is, I cannot imagine the mind trip it is to fall for someone who you know is not really real, who is at best a memoryless sliver of the actual person, who will cease to exist forever soon. I find it so telling that even as she’s dying, this js her concern:

And then she comes back and the immortals are all “mortal affairs stay in the mortal world don’t be sad” the way you talk to a kid who got a little wound up about a make believe play. But the thing is, it’s not make believe to her, the feelings were real. And so she desperately wants to know how LCK has been since she dies, and actually keeps begging to see him again and again (though of course he cannot see her - the scene where by her grave he says he kept his promise and didn’t kill himself so please to give a sign and her tear falls into his palm is poetry!)

And she keeps seeing them as separate entities entirely - when she’s worried if LCK is still alive she reassures herself that Chu Kong is not back and that means LCK is alive. This is such an interesting take and rings so true - because what makes us be us are personality, memory, experiences etc etc - I mean nobody would argue identical twins are literally the same person tho they have identical DNA.
